The Big Idea

Our identity as God's people should shape our conduct before the watching world.

Remember Sunday’s message

Sermon reminders

01

Remember Who You Are

God calls his people chosen, royal, holy, and his own. Their identity begins with his grace and gives them a different foundation for daily life.

02

Remember Why I am Here

Those who have received God's mercy are called to make him known, telling what he has done through both words and actions.

03

Reflect Jesus in My Choices

Faithfulness includes private obedience and honorable public conduct, so that others may see good works and glorify God.

Wednesday’s conversation

Reflect & discuss

Read 1 Peter 2:9–12 together in the ESV.

1 Peter 2:9 · Essential · 8 minutes

Receiving our identity

Which description in verse 9 most changes the way you think about belonging to God? How might remembering it affect an ordinary decision this week?

Leader notes

Where it is headed

Receive identity as God's gift before discussing behavior. Chosen, royal, holy, and belonging to God express privilege and responsibility, not superiority.

Follow-ups to have ready

  • How does belonging to God change the weight we give to a job title, other people's approval, or our failures?

If it stalls

Invite participants to choose one description and explain what it reassures them about.

1 Peter 2:9–10 · Essential · 8 minutes

Telling the mercy story

Peter connects receiving mercy with making God known. How could you describe something God has changed in your life in a way a friend who does not share your faith could understand?

Leader notes

Where it is headed

Practice a simple, understandable account of God's mercy without requiring a dramatic conversion story or sensitive details.

Follow-ups to have ready

  • How can we speak about change while being honest that God is still working in us?

If it stalls

Offer a general example such as learning to forgive or finding hope during difficulty. Let people pass.

3

1 Peter 2:11 · Optional · 9 minutes

Choosing what we feed

Doug described the inner battle in terms of what we feed. What helps turn a good intention into a choice to obey God when no one else is watching? You do not need to share a private struggle.

Leader notes

Where it is headed

Connect private faithfulness to ordinary habits. Doug names prayer, Scripture, and obedience as ways of feeding the desire to honor God.

Background you may need

  • The two-wolves illustration is Doug's illustration of competing desires. It should not be turned into a complete explanation of salvation or spiritual growth.

If it stalls

Ask what could make an obedient choice easier before a difficult moment arrives. Do not ask people to identify hidden sins.

1 Peter 2:12 · Essential · 8 minutes

Giving God the glory

When someone misunderstands or criticizes Christians, what could honorable conduct look like in that situation? How can our response draw attention to God's goodness rather than our own reputation?

Leader notes

Where it is headed

Seek God's glory through honorable conduct rather than winning an argument or managing an image. The passage does not promise that every observer will respond favorably.

Follow-ups to have ready

  • How might listening, admitting a mistake, or responding patiently give credibility to what we say about God?

If it stalls

Discuss a hypothetical disagreement at work or in a neighborhood rather than pressing for a personal conflict.

Carry it into the week

Next Steps

From the sermon

  • Share your personal "but now" story of faith with others.
  • Examine which "wolf" you are feeding daily — align habits with prayer, Scripture, and obedience.
  • Pursue private and public obedience so that your conduct points unbelievers toward God.

Application

Pray for one opportunity this week to make God's goodness known through a thoughtful word and an honorable action.

My notes

Close in prayer

Thank God for his mercy and ask for integrity in private, grace toward others, and courage to make him known.
